The following is intended to describe a framework of the opportunities available for PMI-SV members that choose to volunteer. The chapter is aware that each volunteer has boundaries in terms of schedule and time.

Fundamentally, the opportunities fall into four major categories. Understanding the nature of the work is essential to making a decision on what type of opportunity will suit you. Here is a summary by general category:

Recurring Programs

  • Program Examples: Trends & Viewpoints Seminar, Tools & Techniques Seminar, Breakfast Meetings
  • Work Examples: Host, Registration
  • Location: Fixed by Program
  • Reoccurrence: Monthly, for most
  • Time Required: 4 hours, per month

Ongoing Infrastructure Support

  • Function Examples: Marketing, IT, Volunteer Ops
  • Work Examples: Content Editor, Program Posting Manager, Email Broadcasts Manager, New Volunteer Onboard Process Manager, Volunteer Special Events Host
  • Location: Virtual
  • Reoccurrence: Variable, as required
  • Time Required: 4+ hours, per month

Projects

  • Project Examples: Symposium, Special Programs, Infrastructure Upgrades, …
  • Work Examples: Program/Project Manager, Team Leaders, Individual Contributors
  • Location: Virtual, with some fixed
  • Reoccurrence: N/A
  • Time Required: Variable, 4+ hours, per month

Board of Directors

  • Program Examples: President, Administration, Finance, Programs and Operations (elected positions)
  • Work Examples: Oversight of Portfolio Silos
  • Location: Mostly Virtual
  • Reoccurrence: Ongoing for Term of Office
  • Time Required: 8+ hours, per month
