PM Insights-Sunnyvale: Understanding the Challenge and Incredible Potential of IT Governance

Presentation Description:

This ‘IT governance’ is one of the most prevalent aspects of the enterprise information technology industry and every IT project manager has come face-to-face with IT governance in some form or another. Most if not all business and technology executives, project sponsors, security and audit personnel, and professionals in every area of IT have also encountered the discipline of IT governance. Despite its ubiquitous nature and undisputed recognized importance, very few enterprises have successfully established and sustained IT governance. In fact, if you asked the diverse list of roles involved in IT governance to give you a definition, their answers would vary widely because IT governance is one of the most misunderstood critical business processes.

Research from some of the most preeminent industry authorities has proven the incredible power and promise of sound IT governance. But if IT governance efforts are to have any chance of success, everyone in the enterprise has to be on the same page. Given their far-reaching and influential role, project managers are in a great position to contribute to a common understanding of IT governance in their organizations.

This presentation provides an overview of the IT governance discipline from the perspectives of the most prominent IT governance authorities, such as ISO/IEEE, ISACA (COBIT5), and MIT's Center for Information Research (CISR). Attendees will leave with a sound foundation in IT governance based on the following takeaways:

•      A view into a wide-range of IT governance authorities and a researchable list of IT governance resources

•      An awareness of the challenges enterprises face in IT governance efforts and endeavors

•      Insights for successfully establishing and sustaining IT governance

•      A good understanding of the IT governance discipline and how it relates to project success

•      Numerous job-aids to confidently foster and lead IT governance conversations and efforts back at their organizations
