Synopsis:

Agility is often mistaken as “yet another thing to try”.  This session will show new and experienced practitioners that Agility is designed to remove waste and overhead, not increase it, and thus be a value, productivity, and quality amplifier.

I refer back to Lean principles, in particular the Seven Wastes of Activity (Muda).  This is intended not only to give attendees practical insight into waste, but also to stress that Agility is not “invented” but discovered and is how Lean ideas are applied to knowledge and information work.

The session is part presentation and part exercise.  Attendees will gather data during the presentation, then use this data to collaboratively assess and brainstorm what Agile practices could be applied to waste they can now identify in their specific situations.

Takeaways

The main takeaway is “learn to do less to do more”. The exercises will be based on attendee’s own use cases and hence other takeaways will be specific to individual attendees, but can be summarized as “You spot something that you’d never noticed was wasteful, and have some ideas about what you could do to try to address it, thus freeing up energy and resources.”

About the Speaker:

SP-AndrewWeberAndrew Webster has a rich and varied background.  Born in the UK, he worked initially in theatre production, moved into the interior decoration industry, relinquishing that for a degree in literature as a mature student.  This curious mix meant that he already had an intense training in teamwork, deadlines, interpretation of complex problems, and communication before he started working in the IT industry.

This started in the UK in 1997, but he moved to Australia in 2000, got his Microsoft Certified Solution Developer (while it still meant something) and became Queensland’s go-to guy for environmental engineering database development.  In 2004 he was introduced to Agility, and became used to working on projects that were on time, on budget, and all stakeholders were happy. The finale project he led in Australia came in $9 over budget because he parked in the wrong deck on the last day!

He moved to the US in 2009 to get married, and has worked here as a process guru, Scrum Master, reluctant program manager, and now profoundly happy Agile Coach in the finance industry.

He lives in San Jose with his gorgeous wife, and is currently consulting as a Transformation Agile Coach to a world-famous South Bay financial organization as part of their ambitious Agile transformation.
