Project Managers are often distraught with Project Management tools. Familiarity, vendor preference, ease of use, feature richness, scalability, cost and many other factors play a role in the choice of a tool. When it comes to product releases or quality assessment, many big companies prefer to make their own.

There is no perfect tool, but what's the best way to get started quickly, yet meet the needs of a feet-on-the-street Project Manager?  Well, it may be surprising that out-of-the-box Excel can work wonders.
